Founders' Day Campaign
Founders Campaign
On November 26, 1913, Phi Sigma Sigma was born - the first nonsectarian sorority; the only one that was open to diverse membership from inception and the only one with a ritual that was not based in scripture. Under the leadership of Fay Chertkoff (our first chapter archon), Alpha Chapter was installed at Hunter College." -Phi Sigma Sigma Web site
In 2007 the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation premiered its Founders' Day Campaign to honor the fraternitiy's November 26 founding in 1913 at Hunter College in New York City. Commemorating the legacy of the ten women who first proposed their vision for the advancement of womanhood and Phi Sigma Sigma's twin ideals, the Founders' Day Campaign raises funds needed to support the Foundation's mission.
Each year since, collegians and alumnae have generously contributed. In 2010 alone, nearly $25,000 was raised! Gifts fund leadership programming, scholarships and need-based educational grants, and philanthropic support for organizations and service orientated events across North America.
As we look forward to Phi Sigma Sigma's historic Centennial year, here's a moment to add your name to your chapter's honor roll of Founders' Day donors as we carry on our Founders' work and the lasting legacy they gave to all of us.
Remembering them...
"In 1913, our Founders - Lillian Gordon Alpern, Josephine Ellison Breakstone, Fay Chertkoff, Estelle Melnick Cole, Jeanette Lipka Furst, Ethel Gordon Kraus, Shirley Cohen Laufer, Claire Wunder McArdle, Rose Sher Seidman and Gwen "Rae" Zaliels Snyder - approached the Dean of Women at Hunter College in New York City with a vision. They wanted to start a sorority that would promote open membership to all women of character regardless of background; a sorority committed to sisterhood, excellence in scholarship, and selfless giving.
Thank you for choosing to give your gift now.
