How to Establish a Named Scholarship

Named scholarship funds, as approved by the Foundation, may be established for scholarships to deserving initiated members of Phi Sigma Sigma, including alumnae pursuing post-graduate degrees. With respect to each fund, a local or other advisory committee may be established to make recommendations to the Foundation Board of Directors as to the criteria for the disbursements of the funds to individuals based on certain criteria to include: members of a specific chapter only, a specific area of study, academic achievement and service to chapter, Greek life, campus, and community. The final discretion as to such disbursement must remain with the Foundation directors, according to law. In the case of named scholarships limited to a specific area of study, the Foundation Board of Directors reserves the right to make changes with respect to language related to the field of study.

Process

To apply for approval by the Foundation Board of Directors to establish a named scholarship, the active alumnae or collegiate chapter, or house corporation shall submit a copy of the minutes documenting a vote supporting the establishing of the named scholarship and a vote acknowledging and accepting the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation Policy for the Acceptance of Restricted Funds. In the case of an individual donor or donors, a signed proposal and acknowledgement of the policy should be submitted.

Attached to the minutes/proposal, shall be a document providing answers to the following questions:

  • What is the name of the scholarship?
  • Who is eligible for the scholarship?
    • Sisters from all chapters
    • Sisters from a specific chapter (include chapter letter)
    • Graduate students, undergraduate students, or both
  • Is the scholarship restricted to a specific area of study? If so, which one?
  • What is the weighted percentage of each of the following criterion? Please note, the criteria combined should add up to 100%.
    • Service to the sorority
    • Service to Greek life
    • Service to campus
    • Service to community
    • G.P.A.
  • What is the minimum G.P.A. requirement?

Please provide the reasons this named scholarship should be established and as much information as possible about who the named scholarship honors, such as biographical information, pictures, personal stories, etc. For an example of other named scholarships, please check out our Web site at: www.phisigmasigmafoundation.org.

The Foundation awards a certificate with each named scholarship.

How to Establish a Chapter Education Fund

Chapter Educational Funds (CEFs), as approved by the Foundation, may be established by a collegiate chapter for any educational purpose in accordance with IRS regulations, with the primary focus on scholarships to deserving initiated members of the chapter, including alumnae pursuing post-graduate degrees. CEFs shall be known as the {Chapter Letter} Chapter Educational Fund.

Process

To apply for approval by the Foundation Board of Directors to establish a CEF, a chapter shall submit a copy of the chapter minutes documenting a vote by the chapter supporting the establishing of the CEF and a vote acknowledging and accepting the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation Policy for the Acceptance of Restricted Funds.

The Foundation awards a certificate with each CEF scholarship.

Book Award funds, as approved by the Foundation, may be established for book awards to deserving initiated members of Phi Sigma Sigma, including alumnae pursing post-graduate degrees. With respect to each fund, a local or other advisory committee may be established to make recommendation to the Foundation Board of Directors as to the criteria for the disbursements of the funds to individuals based on certain criteria to include: a specific area of study (optional), academic achievement and service to chapter, Greek life, campus, and community. The final discretion as to such disbursement must remain with the Foundation directors, according to law.

Process

To apply for approval by the Foundation to establish a book award, the active alumnae or collegiate chapter or house corporation should submit a copy of the minutes documenting a vote supporting the establishment of the book award and vote acknowledging and accepting the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation Policy for the Acceptance of Restricted Funds. In the case of an individual donor or donors, a signed proposal and acknowledgment of thee policy should be submitted.

Attached to the minutes/proposal should be a documenting providing answers to the following questions:

  • What is the name of the book award?
  • Who is eligible for this book award? Collegians, Alumnae, or both?
  • Is the book award restricted to a specific area of study? If so, which one?
